Grades 6-12
Overview
Students will create their own lip balm using natural ingredients, understand the concept of beauty justice, and relate it to environmental science by analyzing the health and environmental impact of cosmetic product ingredients.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
Identify common toxic chemicals found in beauty and personal care products and explain their potential effects on human health and the environment.
Apply basic principles of chemistry by safely measuring, mixing, and combining ingredients to create a DIY lip gloss.
Evaluate the benefits of using non-toxic ingredients in personal care products
Use scientific inquiry skills to analyze ingredient labels and research cosmetic ingredients
TEKS Alignment
TEKS 112.39(c)(10)(A): Analyze the relationships between the structure and properties of matter and the energy changes that occur during physical and chemical reactions.
TEKS 112.39(c)(12)(E): Investigate and analyze how humans modify ecosystems and use resources in ways that affect ecosystems, including the production of synthetic materials and how they affect the environment.

Small group activity (4–8 students per group)
